Thirty Percent of Area Stores Fail Alcohol Compliance Checks

During the week of May 25, 2009 through May 30, 2009 the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and Prairie du Chien Police Department conducted joint Alcohol Compliance Checks of local businesses. The businesses checked during this week were Convenience Stores/Gas Stations and Grocery Stores. As a whole, the checks revealed a 30% non-compliance rate. This means that 30% of the businesses sold to young adults under the age of 21 with or without asking for proper identification.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and Prairie du Chien Police Department are conducting these checks using funds from a recently awarded C.A.R.D grant through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. This program pays for Deputies and Officers salaries while conducting these checks as well as salaries for added patrol during special events where alcohol consumption by young adults under the age of 21 may be more prevalent.

These checks will be ongoing through the remainder of the year and will include local bars and taverns in the weeks and months to come. The goal of this program is to find a 0% non-compliance rate. A successful compliance check is where no sales are made to young adults under the age of 21.

  1. That’s a very high non-compliance rate. Wonder if any of the
people who sold had received training in responsible alcohol sales training?
about written alcohol policies? Do the business owners put the
“rules” in writing, make each employee sign an acknowledgment,
and then enforce the ruls? These are key ways to prevent violations.
Glad to see Wisconsin D.O.T. is providing funding for these programs.
I hope they are ongoing. That is also key.
